The profile of Australia’s fast developing biofuels industry is set to receive a boost, with the announcement today of the proposed merger between Renewable Fuels Australia and the Biodiesel Association of Australia.
When it is approved by members of RFA and BAA, the merger will provide a single industry voice for the nation’s ethanol and biodiesel producers, and businesses supporting the biofuels sector. Renewable Fuels Australia Chairman, David Cox, said the nation’s biofuels producers could contribute more than one thousand megalitres to the transport fuel market by 2010, about three times the government’s current target of 350 megalitres, if supported by appropriate policy settings and consumer acceptance. “To help unlock the many benefits of a sustainable biofuels sector to the nation, it is vital that ethanol and biodiesel producers present a united front to government, the fuel industry and consumers. “Once merged, the Association will represent businesses that have or are prepared to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in new biofuels production facilities and associated infrastructure, returning wealth to the domestic economy that would otherwise go to off-shore oil interests,” Mr. Cox said. The Biodiesel Association of Australia President, Adrian Lake, said the USA and Europe had made great progress creating vibrant biofuels sectors in recent years, and it was vital that Australia was not left behind. The creation of a united national biofuels industry Association in Australia will be completed before the end of the year. Petrol and diesel are non renewable petroleum fuels that only have a finite life span as viable transport fuels. Biofuels, together with other alternative fuels such as LPG and CNG will become essential transport fuels during the transition from petrol and diesel to the fuel technologies of the future over the next 20 to 30 years.
